Session: LINQ the future of handling database queries and XML in .NET
Target Audience: Anyone developing applications querying RDBMS’s or XML documents in the near future
Session Level: 200+ with specific roduct/technology technical drill-down
Session Description:
“In looking at the current and next generation of technologies, it has become apparent that the next big challenge in programming technology is to reduce the complexity of accessing and integrating information that is not natively defined using OO technology. The two most common sources of non-OO information are relational databases and XML.”
Don Box, Architect, Microsoft Corporation
Microsoft has risen to this challenge by developing LINQ, Language Integrated Query which they intend to release in C# 3.0 & VB 9.0. Understanding LINQ will be an essential skill for anyone using relational databases or XML in their software development. In this talk Mark discusses
- LINQ Language Features – the new toys, Standard Query Operators and Lambda Expressions.
- Using LINQ for database queries, bridging the impedance mismatch?
- LINQ and XML
- How LINQ should change the way you program.

Mark Lawrence has a breadth of experience developed by working across frontiers, both geographical – the UK, Sweden, the USA and Ireland – and intellectual. Although his skills are diverse (at various points he has been a programmer, architect, consultant, project manager and even a small time CEO) his real loves are software modelling and algorithm design. He is currently engaged in a new start up, ‘the Query Tree’ that will provide an interesting new take on overcoming the impedance mismatch between object oriented applications and relational databases.

Session: Raising the Stakes with Avalon (Windows Presentation Foundation)
Target Audience: Developers
Session Level: 300
Session Description:
Why should you care about adding a groundbreaking User Experience to your applications? Answering that question (in style!) is where we’ll begin, and this developer-oriented presentation will proceed on a whistlestop tour of the Windows Presentation Foundation, formerly codenamed Avalon. WPF allows you to leverage the power of your local PC and provide a unified framework for next-generation user interface, media, documents, and even 3D graphics. Until WPF, incorporating those concepts has effectively been the dark art of the game development shop. No more!
We’ll look at the WPF unified architecture, and then dive into several specific developer concepts you’ll need to know to get started building applications. We’ll explore the declarative markup language XAML and how it maps to your .NET code, and show how it is being used to facilitate tools that will bring designers into the development picture. We’ll look at the concepts of Styles and data binding for your controls. We’ll look at animation, talk about interop with classic WinForms, and if time permits, we’ll even get a glimpse at adding video and 3D.
Finally, the presentation will conclude with links to useful resources for getting started with WPF, hooking into the community, and learning more.
